Now I'm trying to go into HDR-photography, too. These are my first pictures from the Berlin Victory Column (Siegessäule). I mapped them with the Oloneo HDREngine.

My Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3

Now to a cheap but wonderful little lens from Tamron. I just bought it a second time. The first for my Pentax K-7 and now the second one for a Nikon d3200. The lens I talk about is the Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro.

It's an all-pupose-lens. It can't compete with prime-lenses but it's a very good alternative, when you don't want to take your whole camera-equipment with you. If you own a beginner-consumer-DSLR like the d3200 by Nikon, then this is a good lens, when you don't want to buy the expensive lenses from the camera manufacturer. And with a price of about 160,00 Euro / $ 299,00 I think everyone could affort it.

It's a plastic-lens (the body, not the lenses) but that don't mean, it have a bad build-quality. No, nothing hang loose, nothing squeaks when you use the zoom. And that changes not a bit during the live-cycle of the lens. My first lens is now about a year old and as good as new. And with such a range up to 200mm it's a short build lens.

And now, the important question: How about the picture quality?

A short answer: For a price that low you can't get a better all-purpose-lens.

On both following pictures you see the sharpness of the lens. It doesn't matter if you use the 200mm – like on the picture with the two wild hounds – or the macro-function – like on the photo with the coffee. The camera have a great part in the sharpness of the pictures to play but the lens have to fit to the potential of the camera. And the Tamron lens fit to every camera. At least to my K-7 and d3200, so why should it not fit to any other DSLR?

With 18 to 200mm you have a wide range for almost every possible photoshooting. Any other questions? Sure. Everyone talks about the Bokeh when it comes to macro-photography. It's the blur or fuzziness in the background of a macro-photo. But let a picture talk for itself:

I don't have a sample-pic for a 18mm-photo in a town. But be aware that 18mm means slopey houses especially at the edge of the photos. So please don't use the 18mm on your city-trip to whereever. That would be a good possiblity to buy a 40mm prime-lens.

Book Review: Photographing Flowers

This is not one book, it's three books in one:

1. Naturally a book about macro-photograpy
2. Then an illustrated book about flowers
3. A book about the biology of flowers

And that for just one price … priceless.

Davis put a lot of pictures together, to show us, what he thinks is important to take a good macro-shot of a blossom. He tell us, what do you have to consider while taking a picture in the garden or in your studio - if you own one -. So every picture comes with a description and many suggestions to take a good shot. Which aperture he took, if he used a tripod, when it is the best time to take the pictures in your garden, the best lighting conditions, what you need in your „studio“ and and and. He will tell you, what is important while working with a light-box, especially how to treat the flowers right. You will have the impression, that macro-photography is no magic. So probably in the end you have the desire to try it for yourself.

But the book is although a book about flowers. Not only as on object in a picture but as a living beauty - a living creature. This is the second core - or perhaps the main - core of this book: the beautiful pictures of flowers. Roses, orchids, flowers of your meadow or from the park just opposite your street. It's just a joy to look at all the different blossoms. Apart from the explanations this book is a picture-book for photographers, hobby-photographers and people, who enjoy looking at beautiful flowers. And because this is a macro-picture-book you will discover a lot of interesting and uncommon views of flowers.

The last theme is the biological view on the flowers. Davis descripes the origin and the latin name of the flower, how many species of this concrete flower exists. Although you will learn something about gender and reproduction. But don't be afraid, it's not an academic book; you will only learn, what you have to learn for taking wonderful pictures of flowers and their very own characteristics.

So, this a a book with three books inside, very interesting, very lovely pictures and a book you will take more than one time in your hands.

Dieses Buch sind eigentlich 3 Bücher in einem:

1. Natürlich ist es ein Buch über Makro-Fotografie,
2. dann ist es ein Bildband über Blumen und zuletzt
3. ein Buch über die Biologie von Blumen.

Und das Alles zu einem Preis.

Davis hat eine Vielzahl von Bildern zusammengestellt, um uns zu zeigen, was er bei der Makro-Fotografie von Blumen für wichtig erachtet. Er beschreibt, was wir zu berücksichtigen haben, wenn wir ein Bild im Garten oder in einem Studio – wenn wir denn eins haben – aufnehmen. Jedes Bild kommt mit einer Beschreibung und einem Vorschlag, wie man das Beste aus dem Motiv herausholt. Außerdem beschreibt er die fotografischen Details, wie Blende, die Benutzung eines Stativs, zu welcher Tageszeit er die Aufnahme gemacht hat. Außerdem nimmt er Bezug auf das Arbeiten mit einem Lichtzelt und wie man die Blumen ordentlich behandelt, um möglichst gute Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Danach hat man den Drang, es einfach selber mal zu probieren.

Aber es ebenfalls ein Buch über Blumen. Nicht nur als Objekt auf einem Bild, sondern als lebende Kreatur. Und das ist der zweite Kern des Buches. Er bildet alle Arten von Blumen ab, Rosen, Mohn, viele verschiedene Blüten aus dem Garten oder aus dem Park gegenüber. Es ist einfach phantstisch, die Bilder zu betrachten und die teilweisen ungewöhnlichen Perspektiven.

Und zuletzt ist es ein Buch über die Biologie der abgebildeten Pflanzen, denn Davis schreibt zu jeder Blume etwas dazu. Woher sie kommt, ihren lateinischen Namen und vielem mehr. Aber keine Angst, es ist kein akademisches Buch. Er verrät nur soviel, als man zu einem guten Foto wissen sollte.

Zu erwähnen ist noch, dass es auf englisch geschrieben ist. Wer dessen aber mächtig ist, bekommt ein Buch mit vielen praktischen Tipps. Und wer des Englischen nicht mächtig ist, schaut sich einfach die schönen Bilder an.

Book Review: SocialNetworkPhotography

Heute möchte ich ein Buch vorstellen:

Hier einfach meine Rezension von Amazon (leicht abgeändert):

Dieses Buch vereint in beeindruckender Weise fast ausschließlich Selbstportraits, die als Profilbild in lauter soziale Netzwerke hochgeladen worden sind. Die beiden Autorinnen bemühen sich die Bilder nach Kategorien zu ordnen (Pictures at armlength, at the job etc.), was leider nicht immer stringend gelingt, denn die meisten Bilder sind nunmal mit ausgestrecktem Arm oder durch einen Blick in den Spiegel entstanden. Viel Hintergrund erfährt man zu den einzelnen Kategorien nicht, einzig zu Beginn des Buches plaudern die beiden Autorinnen ein wenig über Idee und Konzept zu dem Buch.

Die Kategorienlosigkeit bringt dem Buch allerdings nicht wirklich einen Abbruch. Denn die Bilder macht etwas anderes aus. Nicht die präzise Aufnahmetechnik ist bemerkenswert, denn die Bilder sind allesamt mittels Handykamera entstanden und in den allermeisten Fällen ohne wesentliche Komposition. Nein, die Bilder werden dadurch interessant, dass man ein ungeschönten Einblick in die Welt der Menschen auf den Fotos bekommt. Sie stellen sich dar, in Posen, zu Hause, auf dem Klo, chic gemacht, ihr Essen, ... Manchmal geben die Abgebildeten noch mehr von sich preis: das Buch ist durchzogen von Bilderreihen einzelner Personen. So erhält man Einblick in ihr Lebensumfeld und vielleicht auch ein bißchen in ihre Gedankenwelt... Ein wenig scheue ich mich es zu schreiben: aber das ist ein Aspekt der Fotografie, ein Aspekt den Fotografie ausmacht - die Persönlichkeit des fotografierten Menschen wird eingefangen.

Es ist zweifelslos ein voyeuristisches Buch. Aber es bildet auch einen nicht unwesentlichen Teil unserer aktuellen Kultur und dem Umgang damit ab. Und deshalb ist es interessant, es immer wieder in die Hand zu nehmen und neue Details zu entdecken... Bilder neu zu entdecken. Ein Buch zum drin Schmökern, das, wenn es auf dem Tisch liegt, von allen begeistert angefasst wird.

Und das Beste: es ist zweisprachig - englisch und deutsch.

This book contains self-portraits, which are uploaded to social networks like facebook as profil-pics or avatars. Both writers are anxious to make categories for the pics - but it didn't work. Most of the pictures are taken through the mirror or at arm's length. You will not get a lot background to the pictures - they speak for themself.

All pictures are taken with the camera of a mobile phone and naturally don't have a photographic composition. But all the pictures are able to let you look behind the scene, they will give you a look in the life of the people. They are posing, taken pictures of their home, on the toilet, ... you will be able to look in the living enviroment of the people. And this an indisputable aspect of photography: all the pictures are catching the personality of the person on the picture.

It's a voyeuristic book. But it will give us a look on an essential part of our culture (social networks). It's an interesting book an every time you take it in your hand, you find another aspect in the pictures. That's a real coffe-table-book.

The book is bi-lingual: english and german.

Leica Digilux 2

Meine Leica Digilux 2 / My Leica Digilux 2

An dieser Stelle möchte ich eine Lanze für eine etwas ungewöhnliche Leica brechen: meine Digilux 2. Leica bewegt sich mit seinen M- und S-Modellen - egal ob neu oder gebraucht - in Preiskategorien jenseits von Gut und Böse. Wer also mit schmalem Geldbeutel dennoch eine Leica haben möchte, muss einige Abstriche machen und sich auf die Suche begeben. Zwar gibt es auch im aktuellen Portfolio von Leica Kompaktkameras, die für jedermann erschwinglich sind. Aber was, wenn man das klassische Leica-Feeling erleben will?

Wie wär's dann mit der Leica Digilux 2 aus dem Jahr 2004?

Wenn man ihre Schwächen kennt und damit umzugehen weiß, hat man eine Kamera mit Leica-Feeling. Und falls sie mal bei ebay angeboten wird, bewegt sie sich in vertretbaren Preiskategorien.

Der Kamera wird nachgesagt, dass sie bei ihrem Erscheinen über das wohl beste Objektiv der damaligen Kompaktkameras verfügte (Vario-Summicron 1:2.0-2.4/7-22.5 asph. - equiv. in KB 28-90mm). Leider korrespondiert der 5 MP-Chip in der Kamera nicht ganz so ideal mit dem Objektiv. Aufnahmen ab ISO 400 sollte man sich aufgrund des Rauschverhaltens der Kamera sparen.

Und die Kamera ist langsam. Auch bei Szenen mit viel Aktion kommt die Kamera an ihre Grenzen. Bei Kinder- oder Sportaufnahmen sollte man die Kamera daher einfach zu Hause lassen; es sei denn man legt es direkt auf unscharfe Bilder an.

Damit hat es sich aber auch mit den negativen Punkten der Kamera. Es sei denn man legt Wert darauf, dass die Kamera in Deutschland zusammengebaut werden soll. Dann trägt man hier ebenfalls Trauer: Made in Japan (sie ist, wenn ich mich recht erinnere, bereits eine Kooperation mit Panasonic).

So, nun aber zu ihren Stärken.

5 MP reichen, wenn man mal ehrlich ist, für die allermeisten Situationen auch noch heute. Damit sind selbst Vergrößerungen ohne Unschärfen möglich. Bei den oben dargestellten negativen Aspekten zeigt sich, dass die Kamera vor allem für statische Objekte bestens geeignet ist. Sie ist z. B. der ideale Begleiter bei einer Städtetour. Hier wird man seine wahre Freude an der Kamera haben. Ich werde demnächst noch Beispielsbilder einstellen.

Als wahren Vorteil empfinde ich außerdem die klassische Bedienung der Kamera mit Zeitwahlrad oben an der Kamera und einem Blendring am Objektiv. Da kommt einfach richtiges klassisches Foto-Feeling auf... und aus meiner Sicht geht diese Art der Bedienung immernoch recht fix von der Hand.

Die Abbildungsqualität ist, wenn man dem Autofokus Zeit zum Einstellen gibt, hervorragend. Das Bokeh bei offener Blende finde ich berauschend. Was will man mehr?

Und nun zu einem Punkt, den andere Kameras nicht bieten können. Die Haptik der Digilux ist überwältigend. Wenn man sie anfässt, merkt man, dass man eine andere Kamera in der Hand hält... das oben beschriebene Leica-Feeling stellt sich sofort ein. Ein Übriges dazu gibt die Form der Kamera... in der Art der klassischen Leica-Messsucherkameras entworfen, ist die Kamera einfach etwas Besonderes. Sie sieht allerdings nur wie eine Messsucherkamera aus... im Sucher verbirgt sich ein kleines Display, dass allerdings hervorragend - insbesondere bei sehr hellen Lichtverhältnissen - geeignet ist, das Objekt anzuvisieren.

Erwähneswert ist noch der eingebaute Blitz, der sich in zwei Positionen ausklappen lässt: in der ersten Position blitzt er indirekt, in der zweiten direkt. Das sucht immernoch seinesgleichen.

Jeder, der eine Leica sein Eigen nennen möchte, allerdings nicht über das nötige Kleingeld für eine aktuelle M-Kamera mitbringt, sollte sich wirklich mal nach diesem kleinen Juwel umschauen. Und wer sehen möchte, was man alles aus dieser Kamera herausholen kann, sollte einfach mal nach dem Namen Thorsten Overgaard im Web suchen.
